An oral-maxillofacial surgeon is a doctor that can provide solutions for your dental, facial and jaw reconstruction needs…
At SV Implant Centre located on the campus of St Vincent’s Hospital in Fitzroy, we provide the skill and expertise of our visiting oral-maxillofacial surgeon, Dr Dragan Grubor. An oral-maxillofacial surgeon is a specialised area of dental work and requires the work of a qualified doctor. This surgeon can provide solutions for some the following concerns; facial trauma, jaw, oral, or facial cyst or tumour.
Why would I need to see an oral and maxillofacial surgeon?
You may be referred to an oral maxillofacial surgeon for any facial or jaw related condition, concern or treatment. Here at SV Implant Centre we require the service of an oral maxillofacial surgeon to place the implant for those patients who have little bone to work with or require any reconstruction during treatment. These surgeons are the only dental specialists that are trained to place bone grafts in areas that little bone exists. To ensure that your dental implant treatment is performed by a highly qualified professional it is recommended that the dental practice have an oral-maxillofacial surgeon for extra support and referral.
Dr Dragan Grubor is our visiting oral-maxillofacial surgeon at SV Implant Centre and also the Head of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at the Royal Dental Hospital in Melbourne. Among his commitment with our practice and the hospital he is also a consulting surgeon at the Austin hospital and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne’s School of Dental Science while also running his own surgical practice.
After Dr Grubor completed his specialist training in Sarajevo, at the Belgrade and the University of Illinois, Chicago he worked as an Assistant Professor at the Sarajevo School of Dentistry, while practicing his chosen specialisation at the University Teaching Hospital.
In 1992 Dr Dragan Grubor moved to Australia where he went on to obtain a number of Australian academic accolades, gaining his Bachelor of Dental Science (BDS) and the specialist surgical qualification in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – Fellowship FRACDS (OMS).
Today he is involved in undergraduate student teaching in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and postgraduate teaching for surgical trainees, whilst also coordinating implant education. He continues to publish, present and teach nationally and internationally and has accumulated more than 35 years of experience, as a specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon and as an undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate teacher.

The importance of seeking treatment for your missing teeth
Your missing teeth can influence the entire structure of your mouth and if they need replacing should be considered a priority. During your consultation with our team of professionals we will assess your mouth to determine if you are a good candidate for this treatment and begin the planning for your implant procedure. While alternatives such as crowns and bridges may sound appealing it should be noted that these solutions do not provide the security that is provided by dental implants. This dental solution is surgically placed into your jaw to act as an artificial tooth root meaning it not only looks natural but feels like your natural teeth also.
